Atomic Cafe part 2

I thought that the theme of this documentary was to used as a warning of the dangers of the atomic bomb and the hydrogen bomb. I was wrong when Mr. Bennett pointed out that the theme was that everything that the government says is bull*$&. In the end, when the documentary was showing a simulation of what would happen in a city if an atomic bomb was announced to hit, the authorities said be calm there is nothing to worry. This is completetly false, the minute you find out that a hydrogen bomb is heading to your location is basically you finding out that you are going to die within the next few minutes. In addition, during the times of the coldwar the government encouraged that of fallout shelters will protect you from the bomb. Again, this is bull, there is nothing you can do if a hydrogen bomb is to be detonated near you. A scene that really captured my attention is when the solders were walking towards the site of the detonation of an atomic bomb. The mushroom cloud with the soldiers walking towards is was a really powerful image.

Dark Knight

So I recently saw The Dark Knight and I have to say it was a great movie. The storyline and the characters were all perfect in the film especially the Joker. The way how the director portrayed the Joker was genius from his makeup, to the way he talked, to the actions he made The Joker was really the perfect character for this storyline. The only criticism I have for this film is the fact that it took hours for the film to reach its climax and to develop. The first 90 minutes of the film was all the information that the audience needed to absorb in order to understand the later half of the film. But the film did this in a very slow manner and at times I lost interest in the film until the film finally reached its climax. Overall, I have to say that the film was a great movie and was very thoughtfully made.

The Atomic Cafe

It really does amaze me how an oject thats 20 feet in length can create total destruction that has a 20 mile radius. The beginning of this film was a bit horrific due to the music it played while the movie was displaying the "trinity test," the very first atomic bomb that exploded. So far throughout the documentary it gave me a feeling of horror thinking that we possess such weapons of destruction. A scene that really did make me think was when president Harry Truman was laughing at the matter of bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki and then when the camera rolls he seems indifferent if not guilty of the bombing. Honestly, how can a person laugh with being responible of killing one hundred twenty thousand people. Another part of the film is when the United States force the nomadic tribes of an island to move "temporarily," but in reality they were to never return to their home due to radioactive fallout. The documentary does an extremely well job in delivering the message that the bomb is to be feared.

Dr Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Before watching this film, I knew that this was a critically acclaimed film deemed to be one of the best 100 movies according to the American Film Institute. I did not know that it was a humour beforehand until Mr. Bennett told us so. Because of the reviews I was expecting some sort of a spectacular fulm. Unfortunately this satire did not meet my expectations. Although the film did have its moments I felt that this film does not deserve the repuatation that it has. The film did make me realize how easy it is that the US and Russia could've engaged in a nucelar war during the Cold War era. The role of Dr. Strangelove in the film is VERY confusing. I do not understand why is the whole film named after him if he only has a few lines which is describing the doomsday machine and in the end. One of my favorite moments of the film is when the bomb is being released by the character with the cowboy hat. I do find it funny that Stanley Kubrick characterizes the crew of the B-52 bomber as being "silly looking" with their humorous accent. I also find it funny how he characterizes the president. A key scene of this is when he is having a conversation with the president of Russia telling him that the country is about to be bombed. The way he was speaking seemed hysterical.

Troy

A very interesting film i saw this week was Troy. In many ways this film reminded me of All Quiet on the Western Front. While watching Troy I always had the impression that it was a modern version of All Quiet on the Western Front just like how Dark City is a modern version of Asphalt Jungle. In both film All Quiet on the Western Front and in Troy the main characters all end up dying due to war. In addition, the gory fighting scenes that Troy displayed had the same affect on me as the fighting scenes in All Quiet on the Western Front. Both showed the reality of war and that is is no game. Both films were identical except the fact each film occured in a completly different time era.

A Simple Plan

The movie at first had a slow, monotonous, boring start but as the plot developed the whole aspect of the film became more interesting. One thing i noticed that kept appearing throughout the film is the raven. A motif for this film. It is also symbolic for everytime something went wrong, the raven was always present in the preceding scene. A very disturbing scene of the film is when Hanks wife is giving birth. Usually in a film the birth of a child is something to be in awe in or something to praise, but in this film this feeling is ruined when the wife spoke of her evil plans. The music, the face, the tone this scene had added to the disturbing feeling that the audience would recieve when viewing this scene. The fact that the wife had the newborn baby in her hands multiplies the feeling.

Memento

Memento is a movie that is unique in its own way. Memento is the first movie that I've seen that goes through two narratives but follow a different chronological order. Christopher Nolan is a genius for pulling off such a confusing movie. I thought it was brilliant how he delibrately made the film confusing so that the audience can get a sense on what Leonard was going through. The story with Sammy Jenkins was quite confusing since in the end it was revealed that Sammy never had a wife even though in all the memories of Lenny it was shown that he did have a wife and she was skeptical whether or not Sammy lost his memory. If this was false then where did Lenny get this story from. Also it was revealed that his wife survived the attack and died from insulin overdose. Again how is this possible if in the memory of lenny she did die that very night in which he lost his memory. The whole film is confusing and the audience cant really trust anything thats said in the film. The film is based on a recollection of memories but many of those memories can be false or tampered from what actually happened. Though confusing, this aspect of the film is what makes it so unique and also a very entertaining film to watch
